Activists from Kenya and Uganda claim Tanzania engaged in sexual abuse against them – DW – 06/03/2025

Human rights defenders Boniface Mwangi from Kenya and Uganda’s Agather Atuhaire have claimed they were physically abused and sexually assaulted by Tanzanian security officers while in custody. The allegations were made during a joint press conference in Nairobi on Monday, where both activists had previously spoken of their violent treatment after their release. They had traveled to Tanzania to attend the first court hearing of opposition leader Tundu Lissu on May 19, 2025, who is facing treason charges.

Mwangi, a photojournalist who campaigns against corruption and police brutality in Kenya, described the brutal treatment he endured, including torture and sexual abuse. Atuhaire, an award-winning journalist, also recounted similar abusive experiences. Both have filed complaints against the Tanzanian authorities over the incidents. The activists emphasized their desire for justice and stated that despite the physical trauma, their spirits remain strong. Tanzania’s government did not comment on these allegations, which highlight the increasing repression of political dissent in the country.
