Vanuatu’s Minister for Climate Change, Ralph Regenvanu, has voiced disappointment over Australia’s decision to extend the North West Shelf liquefied natural gas project until 2070. This move has raised questions about Australia’s commitment to co-hosting the upcoming COP31 summit with Pacific nations. The UN is set to announce the host country for the crucial climate summit in the coming weeks, with Australia eyeing Adelaide as a venue for a “Pacific COP.” Regenvanu expressed concern that Pacific leaders, who previously supported the co-hosting proposal, now have doubts due to Australia’s decision. Scientists and activists argue that the extended project could lead to an additional 6 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Regenvanu decried Australia’s stance as contradictory to its emission-intensive economy and fears similar behavior during COP. Despite this, he continues to support Australia’s bid to host COP31, but with expressed disappointment. The potential partnership’s credibility has been questioned, highlighting the tension between Australia’s fossil fuel reliance and its potential to lead a global climate conference.
