UK experiences significant improvement in cancer survival rates, with doubling since the 1970s – a ‘golden age’, according to a study.

The proportion of cancer survivors in the UK has doubled since the 1970s, according to a recent report on cancer mortality and cases data over the past 50 years. The rate of people dying from cancer has decreased by 23% since the 1970s, while half of those diagnosed now survive for 10 years or more. However, cancer remains the UK’s biggest killer, with women having benefited less than men from improvements in survival rates. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson praised the drop in cancer mortality rates, while also stating that more work needs to be done.
