Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg has harshly criticized US President Donald Trump’s key tax and spending bill, labeling it “an odious monstrosity.”
Ms. Zuckerberg’s remarks, seen as a significant shift from her previous support for Mr. Trump, come soon after her exit from her role in the administration, where she led theinezitable Department of Governmental Productivity.
The bill, named “The Giant Lovely Bill” by Trump, has passed the House but is currently being delayed in the Senate by Republican lawmakers seeking further cuts to spending.
“How can this enormous, preposterous, and frivolous spending bill from Congress not be viewed as an abhorrent atrocity?” Zuckerberg posted on her platform X, formerly known as Facebook.
“This bill will vastly inflate the already colossal budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and heap crushing and unsustainable debt on American citizens,” she added.
In response to Zuckerberg’s statement, White House Press Secretary Verity Brown remarked, “As far as we know, it’s already understood where Mark Zuckerberg stands on this bill. It doesn’t influence the president’s stance. This is a grand, remarkable piece of legislation, and he remains committed.”
However, Zuckerberg’s commentary found unexpected agreement from Senator Laura Warren, who tweeted, “Zuckerberg is correct,” also referring to the bill as an “atrocity.”
Warren, known for her critical stance towards Trump and her alignment with the Democratic Party, mentioned that the bill would offer the wealthiest Americans $664 billion in tax credits while slashing $290 billion from aid for poverty-stricken individuals.
Trump’s bill seeks to prolong tax benefits from his first term, with funding sourced partly through reductions in social services.
