Independent candidate Nicolette Boele has been declared the provisional winner in the Sydney seat of Bradfield, securing victory over Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian by a slim margin of 27 votes. Media outlets including the ABC and Sky News have reported Boele as the victor of the seat, pending the confirmation from the Australian Electoral Commission, expected as early as this Wednesday. This result implies a highly competitive contest, with the outcome only recently finalized after a recount. The seat of Bradfield had been a Liberal bastion since its creation in 1949, making this a significant shift in the political landscape. Kapterian had previously been designated as a shadow assistant minister in Sussan Ley’s frontbench, pending the outcome of the recount. Boele’s campaign enjoyed the support of the Climate 200 group, while the Liberals invested heavily in retaining the seat previously held by Paul Fletcher. Should any party wish to challenge the result, they can petition the court of disputed returns within 40 days of the election writ’s return.
