Billionaire Elon Musk has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s key tax and spending bill, calling it “a disgusting abomination.” Musk, traditionally considered an ally of Trump, made these remarks on Tuesday, shortly after stepping down from his role with the Trump administration, where he headed the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE.
The bill, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill” by Trump, has passed the House of Representatives but faces opposition in the Senate from Republicans seeking further spending cuts. Musk took to his platform X, previously Twitter, to express his disapproval, stating that the bill is a “massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill” and accusing lawmakers of wrongdoing for supporting it. He highlighted concerns about the bill’s potential to significantly exacerbate the national deficit and burden citizens with unsustainable debt.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the bill, affirming the president’s commitment to it, while unexpectedly finding support from Senator Bernie Sanders, who also described the bill as an “abomination.” Sanders pointed out the bill’s provisions, which he argued would unfairly benefit the wealthiest Americans with tax breaks while cutting crucial food aid for the impoverished. The bill, aimed at extending tax breaks from Trump’s first term, seeks partial funding through cuts in social benefits.
