US President Donald Trump has issued a proclamation banning travel from certain countries. The proclamation completely restricts and limits the entry of nationals from 12 countries: Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, as informed by the White House.
The ban will come into effect at 12:01 AM Washington time on Monday. Additionally, visitors from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela will face stricter restrictions.
Trump stated that he had to take action to protect national security and the interests of the United States and its people. The White House fact sheet further explains that some of the listed countries lack proper screening and vetting processes, hindering America’s ability to identify potential security threats before entry. It also mentions that certain countries have high visa overstay rates or failed to cooperate in sharing identity and threat information.
Trump implemented several travel bans targeting specific countries during his first term as US president. Initially, in 2017, he imposed a ban on seven majority-Muslim countries for 90 days. Later bans targeted Myanmar, Eritrea, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Nigeria, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Venezuela, and Yemen. However, these bans were lifted by former US President Joe Biden in 2021.
