The White House announced that the US president is sending 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles to tackle “lawlessness” as immigration enforcement actions continue to provoke demonstrations and conflicts.
US President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, where unrest has ensued from ongoing immigration enforcement efforts, resulting in protests and confrontations with law enforcement.
According to a White House statement released on Saturday, the Guardsmen are being sent to “combat the disorder that has been permitted to persist” in California.
California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has voiced opposition to this move, stating in an X post that the action by the Republican president is “deliberately incendiary and will only increase tensions”.
