Consequently, the melting of sea ice is leading to the emergence of new shipping routes between different continents, and extending the duration of the viable navigation season in these freezing waters. However, the increased traffic in the Arctic comes at a significant environmental cost, causing the rapid deterioration of this already fragile ecosystem.
