French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday spoke out against the US withdrawal of climate funding, calling for a global agreement to protect the planet.
This statement came on the eve of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference and in response to increasing pressure on nations to take concrete action to protect the ocean.
Addressing scientists at a forum connected to the UN conference, Macron lamented the impact of reduced American funding on international science and the questioning of multilateralism, urging for a commitment to stop deep-sea exploitation.
“It’s completely crazy to go and exploit, to go and drill in places we don’t know. It’s frenzied madness,” Macron emphasized.

30 Countries Have Committed to Protecting Oceans

Macron, host of the third UN Oceans conference, highlighted that approximately 30 world leaders have pledged to halt deep-sea exploitation.
“We’re not going to give up. It’s completely crazy to exploit, to drill in a place we don’t know,” he reiterated.
Over 50 world leaders are expected to attend the UN Ocean Conference, with the primary focus being the ratification of the High Seas Treaty to enable conservation in international waters.
Thousands of delegates, including scientists and activists, gathered for the conference to address the urgent threats facing the world’s oceans, such as rising temperatures, plastic pollution, and overfishing.
