David Hogg, who served as the young vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and stirred controversy within his party with his pledge to challenge “asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats, has announced his decision to step away from his role. This decision came after the committee announced plans to hold new vice-chair elections, which could have potentially led to Hogg’s removal.
In a statement, Hogg expressed that his intention was to bring positive change to the party. He acknowledged that there were differing opinions on the role of a Vice Chair, emphasizing that disputes over this issue should not divert attention from the party’s priorities.
Hogg plans to focus on his work with Leaders We Deserve, an external political organization he leads. He stressed the importance of concentrating efforts on vital issues rather than internal disagreements.
The committee’s decision to hold new elections for the vice-chair positions comes after months of internal conflict regarding Hogg’s controversial strategy of supporting primary challenges against incumbent House Democrats. DNC Chair Ken Martin advocated for party leadership to remain neutral in these contests.
Martin praised Hogg for being a powerful voice for the party and respected his decision to step back. He expressed confidence in Hogg’s continued advocacy for Democrats across the country and valued his service and dedication.
Hogg’s departure from the race for the male vice-chair position leaves Malcolm Kenyatta, a Pennsylvania state lawmaker, as the only eligible candidate. Elections for the second vice-chair position, which can be of any gender, will open later this week.
