Scientists stumble upon a novel dinosaur species, recalculating the T.rex ancestry

Scientists have identified a dinosaur fossil in a Mongolian museum that they say changes the evolutionary history of tyrannosaurs. The two 86-million-year-old skeletons the researchers analyzed belong to a species now considered to be the closest known ancestor of all tyrannosaurs, including the well-known T.rex. They are therefore the most ancient known relatives of the fearsome predators that roamed North America and Asia until the end of the dinosaur era. The researchers named the species Khankhuuluu mongoliensis, after the Mongolian national symbol of a dragon. The discovery, published in the journal Nature, gives an insight into how tyrannosaurs gradually evolved into large predators through time.
