The federal anti-corruption watchdog has ruled there was no corruption or improper intervention regarding the $2.4m settlement given to Brittany Higgins after she alleged she was raped at Parliament House. The National Anti-Corruption Commission found that the settlement process, including the legal advice provided and the amount, was not subject to any improper influence from public officials. They concluded that the settlement was in accordance with departmental advice and there was no wrongdoing by the Labor government at the time. The case had been referred by former Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds, who claimed that the Attorney General Mark Dreyfus had sought to silence her by not allowing her to defend herself against Higgins’ claims. Higgins’ suit alleged the Commonwealth had not adequately supported her. The Nacc’s findings are released a week after Reynolds accused Dreyfus in court of trying to silence her. The WA Supreme Court is currently deciding on Reynolds’ defamation case against Higgins for social media posts the former minister claims damaged her reputation.
