The evolution of wealth disparities in Europe following the 2008 economic downturn.

Original:

The wealthiest 10% in the eurozone held 57.3% of the total wealth in the last quarter of 2024, up by 2.8 points from 54.5% in the final quarter of 2009, according to the European Central Bank (ECB).

The disparity in wealth has grown in some parts of Europe but lessened in others from 2008 to 2023, the UBS Global Wealth Report 2024 indicates, noting that wealth inequality has mainly increased in Eastern Europe and is mixed in Western Europe.

Belgium had the equal distribution of wealth, while Sweden had the highest level of wealth inequality.

France and the UK had lower Gini scores than the 12-country average of 62.1. The levels of wealth inequality in Sweden increased moderately while Belgium experienced the largest drop.

Wealth inequality may not fully illustrate the distribution of wealth, and it is recommended to also look at absolute wealth levels to better understand a society’s wealth profile.

Our rewrite:

In the last quarter of 2024, the eurozone’s richest 10% owned 57.3% of the total wealth, up by 2.8 points from the 54.5% they owned in the last quarter of 2009, the European Central Bank (ECB) reported.

Between 2008 and 2023, the UBS Global Wealth Report 2024 observes that wealth inequality increased in some parts of Europe and declined in others. Eastern Europe generally saw wealth inequality rise, while the situation in Western Europe is more variable.

Belgium stood out with the most equal distribution of wealth, while Sweden faced the highest level of wealth

Compared to the 12-country average Gini score of 62.1, France and the UK scored lower. Sweden experienced a slight rise in its Gini Index while Belgium witnessed a significant decline, indicating a more equal wealth distribution.

Measuring wealth inequality alone does not fully capture the story. Analyzing absolute wealth levels is also important to understand a society’s wealth profile comprehensively.
