More than 20 leading organizations, including Refuge and Mind, have called on the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to extend the consultation period for its new guidance on the Supreme Court ruling regarding the definition of “woman” under the Equality Act. The group is concerned that the current six-week consultation will lead to rushed guidance that could be legally flawed and potentially discriminate against protected groups. The EHRC extended the consultation once before, from two to six weeks, after receiving pushback from the Commons women and equalities committee. The signatories argue that the ruling could have significant implications for service providers and public bodies, and therefore, the guidance must be robust and well-considered. The EHRC, however, maintains that the current timetable strikes an appropriate balance between stakeholder engagement and the need for urgent clarity.
