A man accused of killing a Democratic state lawmaker and her husband, as well as injuring another state lawmaker and his wife, allegedly attempted to target two additional state lawmakers in “truly chilling” attacks, Minnesota officials said. Vance Luther Boelter, 57, is charged with six federal charges, potentially including the death penalty, if found guilty. He researched his victims and their families beforehand and allegedly planned a larger-scale attack, which police thwarted. Boelter appeared in court and stated that he cannot afford a lawyer and will have a federal defense lawyer. At the state level, he faces two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. The suspect went to the Hoffman home disguised as a police officer, wearing a “hyper-realistic” mask. After the victims were shot, Boelter fled, and the couple’s daughter called 911. The suspect then attempted to visit another lawmaker’s home but was unsuccessful. Boelter was eventually found and surrendered peacefully. Authorities discovered firearms, ammunition, and a list of Minnesota state and federal elected officials in the suspect’s car, including the victim, Melissa Hortman. Law enforcement officials said the officers who confronted Boelter at the Hortman residence thwarted a larger plan. The suspect is scheduled to return to court on 27 June.
