A recent breakthrough in at-home fertility testing reveals a device comparable to birth control pills in preventing pregnancy, set to launch across Europe. The Minilab, created by Inne, a Berlin-based women’s health tech company, originally functioned as a fertility-monitoring tool, identifying users’ fertile windows by analyzing daily changes in progesterone levels via saliva. With a small study showing 92% effectiveness, similar to birth control pills but without side effects, the device gains new potential as a contraceptive. Eirini Rapti, Inne’s CEO, highlights the lack of reliable saliva testing and the advantage of saliva as a direct biological indicator compared to methods influenced by factors like fever or exercise. Certified by the British Standards Institution, Minilab is poised for a September rollout across the European Union and subsequent sales in the UK, marking a stride in the evolution of women’s health apps integrating technology into fertility awareness for more precise and personalized contraceptive methods. Despite its promise, including a control group in studies and expanding its user base will be crucial to substantiate Minilab’s reliability as a contraceptive device.
