A US appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump can maintain his control over the National Guard troops in Los Angeles, despite the objections of California’s governor, Gavin Newsom. The court stated that Trump’s failure to issue a federalization order through the governor did not limit his authority to call up the National Guard. The ruling acknowledged that the Trump administration presented a defensible rationale for deploying the troops. The court decision applies to the mobilization of 4,000 members of the National Guard for 60 days to protect federal personnel and property. Newsom had previously criticized Trump’s decision to deploy the troops to quell anti-immigration protests, calling it an authoritarian move. Trump had also sent 700 US Marines to Los Angeles, claiming that local authorities had lost control of the city. The appeals court ruling overturns a decision from a lower court last week that ordered Trump to return control of the California National Guard to Governor Newsom. Trump celebrated the ruling as a “big win,” while Newsom emphasized that the court rejected Trump’s claim to act without being subject to judicial oversight.
