On Friday, Romania’s newly elected pro-Western president, Nicusor Dan, nominated a center-right former mayor to be prime minister.
This nomination comes as Romania, an EU and NATO member state, aims to establish a new government in order to put an end to the prolonged political crisis that has affected the country since last year.
Dan nominated 56-year-old Ilie Bolojan of the National Liberal Party (PNL) after another round of talks following weeks of deliberation.
Bolojan had previously served as acting president from February to May until Dan defeated a hard-right opponent in a controversial presidential election rerun.
Dan stated that Bolojan is the most suitable person for the position, which includes addressing the budget crisis.
Blojdan’s nomination needs to be approved by lawmakers and his government will be comprised of several political parties including the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD), PNL, the reformist Save Romania Union party, and the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party.
In response to his nomination, Bolojan acknowledged the great responsibility and stated that he will continue discussions with political parties to secure a parliamentary majority, finalize the government, and define the governing program.
