Sir Keir Starmer has stated that maintaining stability in the Middle East is “a priority” following the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The prime minister also urged Iran to “return to the negotiating table” to achieve a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

US strikes on Iran explained

In a statement, the prime minister said: “Iran’s nuclear programme is a serious threat to international security.”

“The US has taken action to reduce this threat, and we support their efforts to do so.

“The situation in the Middle East is unstable, and ensuring stability in the region is our priority.”

“We call on Iran to return to the negotiating table and work towards a diplomatic solution to this crisis.”

It is understood that there was no UK involvement in the strikes on Iran.

Trump: Iran strikes ‘spectacular success’

The US targeted three sites in Iran, with Donald Trump announcing that key nuclear facilities were “completely and utterly destroyed.”

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation confirmed the attacks on Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz sites but insisted that their nuclear programme would continue.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the strikes would have “permanent consequences” and warned that Iran “reserves all options” for retaliation.

‘Trump’s bold decision will change history’

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Mr Trump for the attack, noting that his decision would be recorded in history.
