A counterfeit wedding held at Disneyland Paris in France on Sunday led to a police investigation after staff suspected that the “bride” might be a 9-year-old Ukrainian child. The bizarre event was initially reported by the Le Parisien newspaper stating that a man rented the park’s complex for a private event outside of opening hours for €130,000 ($150,000), and brought in hundreds of extras to participate.
The staff were alarmed by the young girl’s inability to stand in high heels and alerted the police to the possible occurrence of an illicit child marriage. The authorities later confirmed that the “marriage” was staged. The girl’s mother reportedly stated that she wanted her daughter to experience a “princess-like” day at Disney.
According to Deputy prosecutor Alexandre Verney, the event was a filmed, fake wedding with around a hundred extras and Disneyland. A medical examination of the girl revealed no signs of abuse. Four individuals were detained in relation to the incident including the presumed groom, a 22-year-old man from Britain, the Ukrainian mother, and two Latvian nationals.
