The wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to former TV presenter Lauren Sanchez has been relocated following protests against the event in Venice, Italy.
Originally scheduled to be held at Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Misericordia in a central area of the city, it has now been moved to a more secluded site, the Arsenale, due to security concerns. The location will still accommodate the expected 250 guests, which include celebrities like US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner.
Protesters have shown their disapproval of the event, arguing that it would transform the city into a private gathering space for the wealthy at the expense of local needs. They have planned further protests to convey their discontent to the Amazon founder and his guests.
While the exact date and location remain undisclosed for security purposes, it is predicted that the wedding and surrounding parties will have a cost of around €40-€48 million ($46.5 – $55.6 million). Bezos is also set to make charity donations, including a €1 million contribution to Corila, a research consortium studying Venice’s lagoon ecosystem.
