Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, led the Democratic primary for New York’s first Muslim mayor with 43.5% of the vote after 90% of votes were counted. Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor and heavy favorite, was in second place with 36.3%. The final result may take days to be known due to New York City’s ranked-choice voting system, where voters rank candidates in order of preference.
