Assemblay member Zohran Mamdani maintained a lead over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City on Tuesday. However, it may take at least a week or longer to determine the winner of the Democratic nomination since Mamdani has not secured a majority through ranked-choice voting.
In New York City, voters mark their preferred candidates in order of choice in a ranked-choice voting system. If a candidate does not receive more than 50% of votes in the initial round, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed. Multiple rounds of vote counting may be required until a candidate reaches 50% in the initial count.
