A socialist candidate named Zohran Mamdani has won the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old state lawmaker, centered his campaign on addressing the high cost of living.
His campaign proposed free buses, free childcare, new apartments, and an increased minimum wage, funded by new taxes on the wealthy.
If elected in November, he would be the city’s first Muslim and Indian mayor.
The victory is a significant setback for former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was seeking to regain political traction after a scandal involving sexual harassment allegations.
Cuomo had been leading in the polls due to his experience but lost the support of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing to Mamdani.
Eric Adams, the current mayor, plans to run as an independent following reports of bribery charges against him.
Cuomo has admitted to his defeat, stating his intention to re-evaluate and make tough decisions.

Mamdani received endorsements from high-profile progressives such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.
However, critics argue that Mamdani lacks the experience to handle crises, with Cuomo questioning his qualification during the campaign.
