Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has spoken out against the dire situation in Gaza, labeling it as a “catastrophic situation of genocide” and calling for the European Union (EU) to reassess its cooperation with Israel. He criticized the perceived double standard, indicating that while the EU has implemented numerous sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine, there is a lack of similar action against Israel over the conflict in Gaza. Sanchez suggested suspending the EU’s cooperation deal with Israel in light of these events.
In March, a United Nations-backed investigation concluded that Israel had committed “genocidal acts” during its conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, specifically through the destruction of healthcare facilities in Gaza. Irish leader Michael Martin also supported calls for Israel to respect human rights clauses within the EU-Israel Association Agreement, emphasizing the urgent need for the EU to pressure Israel to end the violence and protect civilian lives in Gaza. Both Spain and Ireland are among the countries that officially recognize Palestinian statehood.
Despite these accusations, Israel denies the claims of committing genocide and asserts that its military actions are directed against Hamas militants in Gaza.
