France Enacts Smoking Prohibition on Beaches, Parks in Bid for ‘Tobacco-Free Generation’ | France

Individuals who smoke on beaches or in public parks within France will be in violation of the law, beginning this Sunday, as a result of measures designed to safeguard children against the perils of passive smoking. Bus shelters and facilities in proximity to libraries, swimming pools, and schools will also fall under the scope of this ban, which will be enforced one day after its official publication in the government’s diary on Saturday. The intention behind this early enactment is to shield children from exposure to smoke on beaches just ahead of the start of the school break in France. Nevertheless, some anti-tobacco advocates have expressed discontent as the ban does not extend to the terraces of bars and cafes, areas where many French people still smoke, nor to electronic cigarettes. Despite the ban aiming to protect children from the harms of tobacco use, enforcement will be challenging, and violators could face fines ranging from 135 euros up to a maximum of 700 euros. This measure is part of France’s broader strategy towards cultivating a tobacco-free generation by 2032.
