Elon Musk has announced his plans to challenge lawmakers who support the expansive budget proposal put forth by Donald Trump. Musk’s opposition is rooted in the proposal’s potential to increase the country’s deficit by $3.3 trillion. “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the largest debt increase in history should be ashamed! They will face defeat in the primary next year if that is the last thing I do,” Musk stated on his social media platform, X.
In a statement made shortly after, Musk threatened to form a new political party if the spending bill is passed. Musk argues that the bill’s massive spending proves the US operates under a single party—the “PORKY PIG PARTY,” indicating the need for a new political party that truly represents the people.
Despite his previous $277 million contribution to Trump’s political campaign, Musk has now taken a stand against the president’s proposal. While both Musk and Trump have shown a shared interest in cutting social safety net programs, environmental and health initiatives, and international aid programs, Musk is adamantly opposed to the “big, beautiful bill.”
The Senate’s version of the bill would increase the deficit by nearly $3.3 trillion over the next decade, while the House-approved bill would add $2.4 trillion. Musk has expressed dissatisfaction with both versions, lamenting the proposed cutbacks in subsidies for electric vehicles and asserting that the bill undermines industries of the future while favoring those of the past.
