A federal task force has threatened to cut all of Harvard’s federal funding over alleged violations of the rights of Jewish and Israeli students. In a letter sent to Harvard president Alan Garber, the task force accused Harvard of being deliberately indifferent or willful participants in anti-Semitic harassment of Jewish students, faculty, and staff. The majority of Jewish students at Harvard felt they suffered from campus discrimination, with a quarter feeling physically unsafe. The letter also threatened further funding cuts if Harvard did not change course. Harvard strongly denied these allegations, stating that it had taken significant steps to combat anti-Semitism on campus and was committed to ensuring the Jewish and Israeli community at Harvard felt embraced, respected, and able to thrive. The controversy stems from nationwide protests against Israel’s war on Gaza, which some universities have faced regarding anti-Semitism on their campuses.
