Australian airline Qantas revealed on Wednesday that its customer contact center had been targeted by cybercrriminals, resulting in a breach of a third-party computer system. This system housed sensitive information of approximately 6 million Qantas customers, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, and birthdays. However, Qantas clarified that critical information such as credit card details and passport numbers were not affected by the breach. The airline emphasized that the incident did not impact its operations or the safety of the airline. In response to the breach, Qantas has initiated an investigation into the extent of the data stolen and is in the process of notifying affected customers. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging the trust customers have placed in the airline with their personal information and has reported the incident to Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator. This tragic incident marks not the first time Qantas has faced data security challenges. Recently, the airline had to apologize for a glitch in its mobile app that exposed certain passengers’ personal and travel information.
