A man armed with a gun was fatally shot by police after a prolonged seven-hour standoff in Daisy Hill, near Maryborough in Victoria. Initially, police were summoned to the area around 3 p.m. on Thursday following reports of gunfire. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries.
During the hours-long negotiation, the Critical Incident Response Team, Special Operations Group, and Dog Squad were brought in to support the police effort. The man fired shots toward the officers, leading to the police returning fire just before 10 p.m. As a result, the man, whose identity has not been released, was hit and died at the scene.
According to standard procedure, the homicide squad will be investigating the shooting, falling under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command. The state coroner has also visited the location of the incident.
Recent months have seen a number of police shootings in Victoria. In one case, Madeline Margaret Henry, 33, was shot and killed on May 24th in South Melbourne. This incident occurred during the arrest of a man wielding a machete, as Henry drove her vehicle towards a senior constable. The constable fired four shots, striking and killing Henry.
Additionally, Abdifatah Ahmed was shot dead on April 17th in Footscray after reportedly charging at officers with a knife. Police officers had urged Ahmed to drop the weapon before opening fire on him.
