Ethiopia has completed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Nile, a significant development in the ongoing dispute with Egypt regarding water rights, according to the country’s Prime Minister on Thursday. Cairo, highly dependent on the Nile for agricultural and drinking purposes for its population of over 105 million, vehemently objects to the project. Egypt’s primary concern is that the dam will drastically reduce its access to the Nile’s waters, which it views as an existential threat. For years, Egypt has been pressing for a legally binding agreement on how the water of the Nile is shared.
