Munira Subašic, who lost her youngest son and 21 family members in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, addressed a gathering to stress the importance of remembering the past and delivering justice for victims and survivors. She emphasized the irreparable harm inflicted when children are taken from their mothers. The 1995 genocide, declared by the Bosnian Serb army, resulted in the deaths of at least 8,372 men and boys and the displacement of thousands in a place proclaimed a “safe area” by the UN Security Council. Despite being recognized as genocide by international courts, there are ongoing efforts to deny this atrocity, posing a threat to reconciliation and peace. The international community is called to stand against hatred and division, to learn from history, and to ensure the voices of survivors are not forgotten.
