Ukraine Reports Large-Scale Drone Assault on Kyiv by Russian Forces

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has come under a massive overnight drone attack from Russia, according to local officials. At least 10 people have been reported injured, and fires have erupted across the city.

Drone wreckage has been found on the roof of a residential building in the central Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, authorities say.

Although yet to be verified by the BBC, footage circulating on social media shows explosions in the night sky, as air defense units respond to the attack. Ukraine’s military has also warned of a potential ballistic missile attack.

Previously, Ukraine reported the largest ever aerial attack from Russia, with 728 drones and 13 cruise or ballistic missiles striking cities across the country in multiple waves.

In the early hours of Thursday, the military administration of Kyiv reported Russian drone strikes in six city districts.

“Residential buildings, vehicles, warehouses, office and non-residential buildings are burning,” administration head Tymur Tkachenko stated on Telegram.

He urged city residents to take shelter until the air raid siren was lifted.

Ukraine’s air force announced a threat of Russian drone attacks in multiple regions overnight. It was unclear if there had been any casualties outside Kyiv.

Russia’s military has not announced any statements regarding the latest attack.

Other notable developments include:

  • Ukraine’s emergency service DSNS reported late on Wednesday that three people had been killed in a Russian air strike in Kostiantynivka, a town near the eastern Ukraine front lines.
  • The US resumed sending some weapons to Ukraine, Reuters reported late on Wednesday, days after temporarily halting shipments of critical arms.

In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
