Politicians and campaigners subjected to ‘industrial-scale’ harassment, minister reports| Political News

Politicians and candidates are experiencing extreme levels of intimidation and harassment, with a minister warning of “industrial” levels of abuse. In response, the government is proposing stricter penalties for those found guilty of such behavior.

Rushanara Ali, the Minister for Democracy, asserts that the harassment faced by her colleagues is at an unprecedented high, discouraging individuals, particularly the young, from engaging in politics.

Over the past few years, two MPs have been murdered, and numerous candidates have reported harassment during the last election campaign, prompting the government to act to prevent further violence.

Ali, herself a victim of targeted harassment from pro-Palestinian activists during her campaign, along with others, including Muslim women, reflects a broader trend of aggressive behavior against politicians. The harassment spans across differing political ideologies and is attributed to a disillusioned electorate with easier access to political figures.

A report by the Electoral Commission revealed that more than half of the respondents had experienced harassment, with 13% considering it serious. Vijay Rangarajan, the head of the commission, stresses the urgency in addressing this issue to protect democracy and the safety of all involved.

Ali, having received personal threats, emphasizes the necessity for safeguards in public life and warns of the potential deterrent effect on diverse participation in politics.

The government aims to implement three measures, including the removal of home addresses from election materials, legal adjustments to enhance sentences for harassment, and barring those guilty of abuse from running for office in the future, reflecting some recommendations from a parliamentary report.

Ali underscores the importance of protecting those in public service and aspiring to be, aiming to stem the tide of intimidation and ensure safety in political engagement.
