During the operation, approximately 200 undocumented migrants were taken into custody, according to the authorities.
The United Farm Workers labor union reported on X that the worker “died from injuries sustained during the previous day’s immigration enforcement actions.”
However, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), clarified that the man who died had not been apprehended.
“Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a greenhouse and fell 30 feet (10 meters),” McLaughlin explained.
Trump’s recent crackdown on undocumented immigrants
The raids are part of US President Donald Trump‘s recent efforts to deport undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
The operations also led to protests and confrontations with federal agents in rural Southern California on Thursday.
Trump denounced the protesters involved in attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as “slimeballs” and suggested they should be arrested.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump authorized law enforcement officers who are “on the receiving end of thrown rocks, bricks, or any other form of assault, to stop and arrest these SLIMEBALLS, using whatever means is necessary to do so.”
Additionally, a federal judge in California issued orders temporarily halting some of the Trump administration’s more aggressive tactics for apprehending undocumented immigrants.
The judge’s temporary restraining orders prohibited the administration from detaining immigrants suspected of being in the country unlawfully based on profiling and from denying those detained the right to consult with a lawyer.
