Australia will not commit to joining a hypothetical conflict with China over Taiwan if requested by the US, according to Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also stated that Australia wants peace and security in the region, aligning with America’s “strategic ambiguity” policy regarding military intervention in a Taiwan conflict. Reports indicate that the US is seeking guarantees from allies, including Australia and Japan, on their potential responses to a US-China war over Taiwan. Conroy emphasized that any commitment to war would be decided by the Australian government of the day. The AUKUS agreement, which involves the US sharing nuclear-powered submarines with Australia, is under review, amid reports that former President Trump may seek additional costs from Canberra to fulfill the deal.
