In a recent speech, French President Emmanuel Macron announced an additional €6.5 billion in military spending over the next two years.
The President emphasized the need for increased efforts to protect Europe and support Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Macron aims for France to reach €64 billion in annual defense spending by 2027, which is double the €32 billion spent in 2017 when he took office.
He stressed that freedom has never been more threatened and that power is necessary to be respected on the international stage.
Macron also mentioned that France can increase military spending while reducing its national debt. He urged the military and defense leaders to engage in a strategic dialogue with European partners regarding France’s nuclear arsenal and its role in Europe’s security.
The announcement comes as the global community faces multiple threats, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and foreign disinformation campaigns.
Macron’s statement coincides with an expected announcement from US President Donald Trump concerning Russia and the visit of the NATO Secretary-General to Washington for discussions.
