The government should consider implementing a new scheme to detect individuals obsessed with violence before they commit acts of violence, according to an upcoming official report. The report, which focuses on the controversial Prevent program designed to prevent terrorism, also highlights repeated failures in addressing the case of the man who assassinated MP Sir David Amess. The review, conducted by David Anderson QC, the interim reviewer of Prevent, aims to examine the blunders in handling the case of Ali Harbi Ali, who murdered Amess in a terrorist attack in 2021, and was previously dropped too soon by Prevent. The findings may intensify calls for a public inquiry into the Amess case, similar to the ongoing inquiry into the Southport attack, which saw 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana referred three times to Prevent for his interest in violence and mass atrocities before rejecting him without ideology being detected.
