The high-profile trial of a palliative care doctor, accused of murdering at least fifteen individuals, is set to commence in Berlin on Monday. The public prosecutor’s office in Berlin is also conducting an investigation on whether this 40-year-old suspect may be linked to numerous additional cases.

The suspect, whose name remains undisclosed in accordance with German privacy laws, is charged with murdering terminally ill patients during his tenure with a nursing service in the German capital. Despite the grave illnesses of the victims, their deaths were not anticipated to occur at the time.

The 255-page indictment accuses the suspect of administering a lethal mixture of medications, involving an anesthetic and a muscle relaxant, without the knowledge or consent of twelve women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024. The victims’ ages ranged from 25 to 94 years.

The trial is anticipated to extend until at least January 28, 2026. The physician initially caught the attention of the police during arson investigations, where he allegedly set fires to conceal the murders.

The suspect, who is married with one child, has not made any comments in response to these accusations, according to both his defense team and the prosecution. He has also declined any interaction with a psychiatric expert.

Interestingly, the suspect reportedly wrote a doctoral thesis in 2013 at university titled “Why do people kill?”, which explored homicides committed in Frankfurt am Main from 1945 to 2008.
