The continuing search and rescue operations in Texas were disrupted by rain forecasts for the second day in a row following the devastating floods on July 4, which claimed at least 131 lives. Rescue crews were mostly prevented from operating due to fears of further heavy rain and potential flooding. The number of individuals unaccounted for has been reduced to 101, with 97 still missing in Kerrville and four more in surrounding counties. Authorities are draining nearby reservoirs to try and locate vehicles and victims. Since July 4, no one has been rescued alive, with the majority of those killed being children at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer retreat.
There has been criticism and threats directed at authorities for the lack of flash-flood warning sirens in Kerr County and the possibility of insufficient staffing at the National Weather Service due to cuts under the Trump administration. Governor Abbott has announced a special legislative session to investigate the emergency response and preparedness measures before the flood. Heavy rains are forecast to continue through Tuesday, with up to six inches expected in parts of central Texas, including affected areas. With similar events potentially occurring, concerns are raised about preparedness and emergency response measures.
