In her statement, Leavitt informed the press of mild swelling in Trump’s lower legs, which were found to be symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition commonly found in people over the age of 70. Trump is currently 79 years of age.
The publicity of this information comes following the release of photos where Trump’s bruised hand and swollen legs were visible. Leavitt attributed the bruised hand to frequent handshakes and the fact that Trump takes aspirin as a preventive measure against heart attacks and strokes. She further confirmed that no signs indicating deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease were present in Trump’s laboratory test results.
A letter from presidential physician Sean Barbabella stated that Trump remains in good health. CVI, according to the Johns Hopkins Medicine, is a condition where leg veins cannot properly return blood to the heart, but it is not considered a serious health threat. Stanford Medicine notes that CVI can cause swelling in the legs due to fluid pooling there.
