mKaidasa: Sahel Alliance Remembers Its Ambassadors From Algeria
An alliance of Sahel countries, comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, has announced they have recalled their ambassadors to Algeria. This move comes after allegations that Algeria shot down a Malian surveillance drone, leading to escalating tensions between the countries. The military alliance termed it an “irresponsible act” that violated international law. The wreckage of the drone was found 10 kilometers south of their shared border, with Algeria claiming it had violated their airspace by over two kilometers. Mali has also withdrawn from a regional military group and announced plans to take the matter to “international bodies.” These strains come at a time when the Sahel alliance was formed last year by military leaders who had quit the West African bloc ECOWAS. Tensions have been on the rise with Algeria, including an aggressive stance towards the use of Russian mercenaries and armed drones by Mali’s government.
