Brazzaville abduction of Congo’s opposition figure sparks concern

His party has pointed the finger at the government, accusing them of being behind the kidnapping. The spokesperson for Les Socialistes Congolais, Martial Mbourangon Pa’nucci stated, “We are convinced that it is Brazzaville’s dictatorship behind the kidnapping. This is not the first time he has been arrested. The kidnappers were armed and masked and used a vehicle without a number plate. For these reasons, we believe it is a kidnapping and we will continue to mobilize the socialists, as well as the Congolese population and diaspora.”
A joint statement was released on Thursday by several opposition parties condemning the kidnapping and demanding Mbouity’s release without conditions.
Clément Mierassa, Congolese Social Democratic Party leader said, “This cowardly act is part of a worrying escalation of terror, intimidation, and systematic human rights violations in the Republic of Congo. It’s a serious breach of personal freedom and directly violates Article 9 of the October 25, 2015 Constitution. We demand Lassy Mbouity’s release.”
The Congo’s Human Rights Organization has also chimed in, issuing an urgent appeal for international aid. The government has yet to respond to the kidnapping accusations.]]>
