There are new videos showing groups of people armed and forcing civilians to go to an unknown place. Some elderly individuals and children who couldn’t keep up were threatened with knives. There is also footage of unresponsive civilian bodies, reportedly victims of a massacre in the town of Gayeri, which is in eastern Burkina Faso.
The government has denied these videos, calling them misleading and part of a wider campaign aiming to damage the nation’s reputation. The government said the aim of sharing such videos is to create divisions and stir up ethnic conflicts. They reassured the public that Burkina Faso is committed to peace and the welfare of all its citizens.
Prosecutor Blaise Bazié has confirmed the opening of an investigation into messages encouraging the killing of members of a particular ethnic group, often targeting the Fulani people.
The authorities have also called for witnesses to come forward, urging people to report instances of hate speech being spread online.
