Protesters gathered in Jerusalem on Wednesday and marched towards the home of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to oppose the government’s resurgence of the war in Gaza. The protests were in response to Israel breaking a fragile ceasefire early Tuesday, launching a barrage of bombs on the Gaza Strip, which outrage many Israelis and raised concerns about the hostages still held there. The strikes resulted in the death of over 400 Palestinians, shattering the ceasefire that had been in place since January, according to local health officials.
Alon Shirizly, one of the protesters, stated, “Netanyahu will create the murder of the 59 hostages in Gaza that are still in the tunnels. They are waiting for us to take them out and bring them home, but war will not achieve that. Only negotiation will.”
Another protester, Anat Shoval from central Israel, commented that the Israeli government had taken a wrong path that has damaged democracy and the country as a whole. She believed every citizen should speak up about the issue.
There are currently 24 living hostages remaining in Gaza, and Israel claims that Hamas holds the remains of 35 captives. Netanyahu ordered Tuesday’s strikes after Hamas refused to free half of the remaining hostages as a precondition for extending the ceasefire. Israel’s bombardment has killed mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Netanyahu declared that the attack was “only the beginning” and that Israel would press on to meet its war objectives, such as eradicating Hamas and rescuing all hostages.
The White House expressed its support for Israel’s actions, confirming that they had been consulted. Meanwhile, aid groups have warned that supplies are running low two weeks after Israel severed all food, medicine, fuel, and other essential supplies to the two million Palestinians in Gaza.
