A year following his historic election, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s record is a mix of both positive and negative outcomes. Faye and his Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had committed to reviving the economy, tackling corruption, and ensuring food sovereignty. However, while some of Faye’s supporters express confidence in his vision and believe that the government’s project is promising, others feel that his administration has not shown enough ambition.
A youth residing in Dakar believes that the project shows potential, but the government needs to welcome criticism. On the other hand, a motorcycle taxi driver expressed disappointment as the government’s promises have yet to materialize, and there is no visible progress towards job creation.
Despite criticisms, Faye has instituted measures to mitigate food inflation, conducted audits on the previous government, and implemented plans to revitalize Senegal’s agriculture sector. Nonetheless, his opponents argue that it is insufficient and contend that revitalizing the economy requires more substantial action.
In response to the criticism, Prime Minister Sonko’s government has launched a campaign to prevent administrative waste, clean up public finances, and promote justice. While political analyst Mamadou Thior views the government’s efforts as generally positive, Senegal’s citizens still expect more from their administration, particularly in addressing social and economic issues.
