DR Congo: Blast during M23 event leaves scores injured as insurgent officials claim responsibility

Following an explosion during an M23 rally in the Democratic Republic of Congo, rebel leaders report that dozens of people have been injured and eleven killed.

The incident occurred in the city of Bukavu, located in eastern Congo.

Corneille Nangaa, the head of the Congo River Alliance, which comprises the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, stated that the perpetrator was among the deceased.

“Here are the initial findings we have: this attack resulted in eleven deaths, including a woman. We are currently verifying the information. The attacker is also among the dead. There are 65 injured, with six in critical condition,” said Corneille Nangaa, rebel leader of the Congo River Alliance (AFC).

He also accused the Congolese President of not engaging in negotiations with the rebels, stating, ”we have consistently expressed our desire for a political solution to the complex crisis in Congo. Unfortunately, we regret that he (President Felix Tshisekedi) prefers the option of war.”

The Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have made significant progress in the region, resulting in the deaths of around 3,000 people and the capture of key towns such as Bukavu and Goma.
