Egypt criticizes Israel’s obstruction of aid amid stalled negotiations for a truce

Humanitarian aid destined for Gaza was turned back to Egypt on Sunday as Israel stopped all food and supply deliveries, increasing tensions regarding a fragile ceasefire. In response to Hamas not accepting a new truce extension, Israel warned of “additional consequences” and Egypt accused Israel of using starvation as a means of warfare.

“Every party has to fulfill their obligations. The exploitation of aid as a weapon of collective punishment and starvation should not be permitted under any circumstances,” stated Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, denouncing the action as a breach of international humanitarian law.

During the initial phase of the ceasefire, which commenced on January 19, there was an increase in aid deliveries. The second phase aims to secure the release of remaining hostages in exchange for an Israeli military pullout and a lasting ceasefire; however, negotiations have been deadlocked. Hamas labeled Israel’s halt on aid as “a war crime and a blatant attack” on the ceasefire.

The International Committee of the Red Cross cautioned that if the ceasefire breaks down, it may plunge Gaza’s population of over two million back into crisis. Meanwhile, UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher termed Israel’s decision as “disturbing,” and MSF denounced it as “unacceptable and outrageous.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel stands ready to resume combat if talks prove unfruitful, affirming that the government stands in full accordance with the Donald Trump administration. As the blockade took effect, Gaza residents reported doubling food prices, igniting fears of a renewed humanitarian crisis.
