At least eight individuals lost their lives in a tragic accident near Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, when a trailer crashed into stationary vehicles and erupted into flames, according to police reports from Wednesday.
This incident took place on a bustling highway close to the Nyanya Bridge in Ayo, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city center. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command stated that the trailer, loaded with cement, lost control and collided with 14 vehicles trapped in traffic. The accident occurred in an area powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), as indicated by the city’s Emergency Management Department.
“The impact caused a furious blaze, engulfing 14 vehicles. Panic and chaos ensued as onlookers and motorists fled in search of safety,” the statement declared.
It was also mentioned that six victims were rescued from the wreckage and subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital. The lack of a reliable railway system for cargo transportation makes these types of deadly truck accidents distressingly common on Nigeria’s main roads. Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, frequently experiences such incidents.
In January, a gasoline tanker blast in north-central Nigeria, near the Suleja area of Niger state, resulted in the loss of 98 lives. The incident occurred as people attempted to transfer gasoline from a crashed oil tanker to another truck using a generator, while some bystanders were present to collect gasoline.
